BECOME A PATRON OF THE WALPOLE SOCIETY
And help write the next chapter of British art history

Our Patron membership tiers are named after four exceptional people who – like our Patron members themselves – occupy a significant place in The Walpole Society's story. This higher level of commitment from our Patrons enables us to give our authors greater assistance in the preparation of their contributions to our annual volume. Patron support also helps us to plan ahead for new initiatives that encourage research and writing in British art history.
OLIVER MILLAR Patron
Sir Oliver Nicholas Millar (1923-2007) was Surveyor of the Queen's Pictures from 1972-1988. He was President of the Walpole Society from 1999-2007, and contributed Volumes 37 and 43, both pertaining to his extensive research on the art collection of King Charles I.
KATHARINE ESDAILE Patron
Katharine Esdaile was an art historian with a particular interest in post-medieval sculpture in Britain. One of Esdaile's most noteworthy contributions to British art history was her involvement in the preparation and transcription of the Note Books of George Vertue, published by the Walpole Society between 1930 and 1934.
BRINSLEY FORD Patron
Sir Brinsley Ford joined the Walpole Society in 1938, and served as its President from 1986-1998. His life's work was the compilation of material relating to British and Irish travellers in Italy in the eighteenth century, eventually published as a biographical dictionary. Walpole Society Volume 60 comprised a two-part catalogue of the Ford Collection of art.
ALEXANDER FINBERG Patron
Alexander J. Finberg founded the Walpole Society in 1911. His expertise in Turner, and in British watercolours more broadly, revealed the shortcomings in historical knowlegde of British art, and he established the Society in order 'to provide for the publication of materials for the study of the history of British art' in an annual volume.
